He is the son of Shakespearean actor Alec Clunes , mostly known for his work on the stage, and Clunes is also the cousin, once-removed, of another distinguished English actor, Jeremy Brett , who was particularly known for his celebrated interpretation of Sherlock Holmes on British television.
He has one daughter, Emily.
He lives opposite the Globe Theatre in London.
He is one of the young men in Gilbert and Georges 1983 photo-sculpture The World.
He attended kindergarten with Peter Morgan.
He attended Royal Russell School.
He is a keen camper-van driver.
In March 2008, he was living near Beaminster in Dorset.
His first television acting job playing a camp alien prince on "Doctor Who" in 1983 has frequently been ridiculed in comedy clips shows and was mocked by Sir Michael Parkinson and Jonathan Ross when Clunes appeared as a guest on their respective talk shows. Clunes has admitted he is somewhat embarrassed by his performance in the serial "Doctor Who" {Snakedance: Part One } and declined to contribute to any special features for the BBCs DVD release.
He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2015 Queens Birthday Honours List for his services to drama and community in Dorset.
